General self: 67, active, Ph.D., intuitive, analytical, emotionally open. Family self: 37-year-old son whom I raised on my own from when he was 4 months old and who, with his wife and two children (2 & 5), live in Evanston, IL. Interpersonal self: communicative, honest, self-aware, witty, ironic. Relationship self: separated in early May (wife's decision) after a 14+-year relationship. I also know that juggling separate and joint needs is a never-ending work of art and good will. Intellectual self: My overall interests are heavily interdisciplinary. I seek esp. to understand how human beings reached the point we have--and how I can protect myself from the results... My Ph.D. (Berkeley, 197 is in Renaissance English literature but my dissertation was really in history of ideas. I read (or listen to recorded books) especially in a wide range of history, am auditing a course in African pre-history, and am especially fascinated by developments in genetics and the interplay between genetics and culture. For awhile I read extensively on pre- and post-Columbian interactions between Europeans and western hemisphere peoples. Fun self: aside from intellectual pursuits, I am an actor, like ballroom dancing, can be very silly, play various sports but esp. tennis, enjoy museums & a range of TV programs (e.g., The Office, 30 Rock, BBC mysteries, edgy cop shows) but NOT "reality" or talk shows. I love to travel, though cost is a factor. Political self: I'm to the left of the Democratic party and a card-carrying ACLU member. I was once a peace and civil rights movement activist.
