french poetry, primatology & other monkey business
Atheism has led me to scientific naturalism as a world view. This has some surprising spin-offs: I can now contemplate sleeping outdoors, anywhere! even in a cemetery, since I no longer have to worry about the menagerie of spooks(ghosts), ghouls (dracula), zombies (Jesus the Undead)and all the other terrors and freaks of the enslaved religious/spiritual imagination. All i have to worry about is humans and other wild beasts. Another benefit: I no longer have to struggle to make the observables fit my faith view: so, for instance: i can now accept being a member of a violent species of homonid, technologically savvy but unwise, armed to the teeth, with a serious death wish (to witness: cars, nukes and apocalyptic religion)In other words, I can at last drop the quasi-religious humanistic claptrap about homo sapes being somehow special, priviliged, predestined to cosmic transcendence (or even significance) Humanism was, is and always will be the bastard child of the unholy wedding between moribund christianity and the enlightenment... Such acceptance brings equanimity in the face of planetary meltdown of human civilization (not planetary meltdown, mind you! ... in that sense I am a partisan of James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis: we are too puny to hurt Gaia; she will scratch us off her hide long before we could seriously upset her) But before we get there, let's have some fun: intellectually and sensually.... I love dogs, horses and wild lonely mountain country: camping, hiking, fishing. If you think you might swing like me, give a monkey hoot in the direction of my tree: rufi_dukes@yahoo.com.au
